We are delighted to say that our founder Sue, received her RSPCA silver Lord Erskine award today for her outstanding contribution to animal welfare. We are all very proud of her.

Susan Schwar - Lord Erskine Silver Award

Susan founded and runs South Essex Wildlife hospital. She spends countless hours helping sick and injured animals that would not survive without her. She helps the RSPCA with collecting animals at short notice and covers many miles, day and night, to tend to needy animals. She works 24/7 and rarely gets a day off, and she trains volunteers to help her with the animals and also gives educational talks to the community.

Summer is in full swing. We are getting busier and busier every year. We are currently taking in as many as 400 birds a week. The majority of these birds are nestlings and fledglings that require feeding every 15 minutes. The cost of round the clock heating, food, medicines and bedding for our patients is running into thousands. If our 12,000 supporters could donate to our £1 for wildlife campaign, we could help so many more animals this year.

On Monday 5th June we have volunteers from marks and Spencer's outlet store coming for a 3 day gardening project. We are aiming to create a perfect example of a good wildlife garden and have been busy preparing not easy when it is the busiest time of year for us. The project design requires quite a number of logs or thick branches which we are a bit short of so if anyone has some they are not wanting and could drop off at the hospital we would be extremely grateful. Please don't cut any trees ... See more

We are now looking for potential release sites for all our orphan fox cubs. The youngsters can be very naughty when it's cleaning time although most of them tend to run and hide.

Tom attended an injured deer late at night a few days ago that had been trapped in railings. The muntjac was badly injured and exhausted. Although quite small these animals are extremely strong and the males not only have dangerous antlers but also tusks, and they know how to use them ! Always handle with care !

Tom and sue rushed out to a fox at lakeside intu shopping centre who had managed to get her in a box , but sadly the vixen died. She was lactating and had been injured and struggling for some time as her head wound was full of maggots. The centre has kindly donated a generous voucher for £100 to our charity for our efforts, sue just has to find time to go and collect it !

This little robin was hatching from his egg when he arrived at the hospital.
We have a good success rate with raising baby birds but all our volunteers will agree it's really hard work !
